Flash Nostalgia

Hey everyone! ๐Ÿ‘‹ I'm Serverket, and today Iโ€™m officially releasing Solarmax Zero v1.9.4 here on itch.io.

I wanted to take a moment not just to drop a changelog, but to share what this project has meant to me, why it exists, and the hard engineering lessons learned across nearly ten iterations of building a real-time strategy game from scratch.

๐Ÿš€ Why I Built This: The Death of Flash

Years ago, minimalist space RTS games like classic Solarmax were peak browser gaming: you opened a tab, and within seconds you were commanding hundreds of ships in pure, uncluttered tactical warfare.

When Flash died, most modern web games went in the wrong direction: pay-to-win mechanics, invasive tracking scripts, 30-second unskippable video ads, and bloated 200MB download bundles, and don't even get me started on the Android 'licensed' version.

I missed the era of pure, honest gameplay. I wanted to see if it was still possible to build a modern, high-framerate space RTS that loads instantly, respects the player's time, runs 100% free with zero ads, and stays completely open source.

๐Ÿง  The Lessons

Building Solarmax Zero was lots of fun, but every minor release came with a humbling engineering lesson:

1. React vs. 60 FPS Physics (v1.0 โ€“ v1.5)

In early versions, I made the mistake many web developers make: letting the UI framework touch the active simulation loop. The moment you have 600+ fighters calculating homing trajectories, laser dogfights, and plasma trails, garbage collection spikes will ruin your framerate.

๐Ÿ’ก The Lesson: Keep the simulation loop isolated in pure TypeScript/Canvas with zero allocations per frame. Today, the physics engine runs at a locked 60 FPS even during 4-faction free-for-all dogfights.

2. Touchscreens (v1.6 โ€“ v1.8)

A mouse cursor is forgiving; a thumb on a smartphone screen is not. Adapting drag-and-drop fleet routing, multi-planet selection, and percentage sliders so they felt natural on both a 4K desktop monitor and a mobile device, quite a few headaches in week one.

๐Ÿ’ก The Lesson: If mobile controls feel clunky, the game feels clunky. Designing safe-area bounds and responsive gesture thresholds made the fleet warfare accessible to anyone with a browser.

3. Motherships (v1.9+)

Classic solar warfare is fun, but systems eventually hit a ceiling. Adding massive derelict Motherships with automated defense turrets and warp conduits forced me to rethink the AI logic so computer commanders wouldn't just swarm blindly, but actually coordinate multi-vector pincer attacks, I even became addicted to using them on every match, the power.

๐Ÿ’ก The Lesson: Endgame depth doesn't require complex menus—it requires meaningful board dynamics that disrupt established player habits.

๐ŸŒŒ Today (v1.9.4)

With this official itch.io launch, you get the complete experience:

  • Full Tactical Campaign + Mothership Expansion: 7 dedicated end-game sectors featuring giant derelict flagships and automated defense turrets.
  • Intense 4-Faction Skirmishes: Battle up to 3 AI commanders competing dynamically for system control.
  • Cinematic Audio Experience: Fully scored with atmospheric space tracks composed by Stellardrone (Light Years album, CC-BY 3.0).
  • Zero Distractions: Pure instant-loading tactical gameplay with zero tracking scripts, zero ads, and zero downloads required.

๐Ÿ’– Free - Independent

Solarmax Zero is 100% free forever — no paywalls!

If you enjoy commanding fleets and want to help accelerate development (multiplayer infrastructure, new campaign sectors, and custom map editor upgrades), consider throwing a tip into the jar when claiming the game. Every bit of support directly funds ongoing development. Thank you so much!

๐Ÿ’ฌ We Want Your Feedback!

Jump into the fleet, conquer your first star system right now in your browser, and let me know in the comments below: Which sector gave you the hardest fight?

See you in the lobby,
Serverket
